Title: Something interesting I found.
Post by: 14Times on March 18, 2012, 02:31:29 am
Hi there.

I'm new here, so forgive me if this has been posted before, but I found a forum about vocal ranges of various singers, including King.
http://therangeplace.forummotion.com/t96-king-diamond

According to these people (I've met several "note watchers", and they're pretty obsessive about this sort of thing, so I'm willing to believe them), King's vocal range, with falsetto and fry (sort of like the low note "version" of falsetto) registers included, is a semitone under five octaves (from C sharp in the first octave to C in the sixth octave). Without the falsetto and fry registers, it's somewhere between 3.5 - 4 octaves (apparently there's some older stuff that's difficult to tell whether it's falsetto or head voice).

Pretty impressive, given that there are only 4 singers they have confirmed to be able to span over 4 octaves using the modal (regular voice) register.

Another thing I find interesting is that the KD/MF songs with the highest notes (non-falsetto) are "Give Me Your Soul" and "Up From the Grave". Can't say I expected that (although to be honest, I can't tell the difference between high notes in the modal register and falsetto notes).

Again, I apologise if this has been posted before.

King is by far my FAVORITE singer, but there is ONLY one dude who could have topped him in his prime, and that is Rob Halford. During the Painkiller era, his vocals were probally at it's peak. I find it amazing that King Diamond had never been professionally trained, like Halford had, early on in his career. That just goes to show the massive talent King has!

I disagree. Rob Halford in the Painkiller era (that is, if we're talking about live) was actually headed downslope fast. He's never ever approached the level of singing displayed on the title track in the studio. But if we're talking about the studio recording, then I have to agree. Painkiller is, in my opinion, vocally the best metal album ever. Even if Victim of Changes is probably the biggest vocal showcase song they have, Painkiller as a whole is vocally amazing.

Dude, check out Rock in Rio 1991. I mean, it was his peak. He struggled a LITTLE live during that song, but it's hard to sing Painkiller live. Check it out though:

This is interesting ^_^

Wonder where the beginning of "More Than Pain" would rank for low voice?

I don't know anything about pitch names and such.

Completely unrelated to King, I know, but I thought some of you might be interested in hearing the highest vocal note by a male. While King can get pretty high... this guy.... :icon_eek:

Yeah, one of the things that made King sound so cool to me is how he often put so much metallic force into his high notes, including falsetto.

Holy fuck @ the mouse man haha.

That is crazy, but its kinda like the "speed guitarists" that break records but sound like shit. King actually sounds good and can reach high pitches without making you want to stick a spork in your ear. That guy almost caused me to have a brain aneurysm haha.

I wonder what the scale-thingy is for "Black Masses"? I bet it's insane.
