Title: King Diamond vinyl reissues 2014 from Metal Blade
Post by: marblesmike on April 16, 2014, 12:56:17 pm
I was on the Bull Moose music store online site and came across these:

http://www.bullmoose.com/p/16308319/king-diamond-them
http://www.bullmoose.com/p/16323986/king-diamond-abigail

This is a legit store.  I went on the Metal Blade site and saw no reference to these.

Anyone know anything about these reissues?

First time hear about this. I'll see about details, but this is totally unnecessary. Recently Cargo Records released Them & Abigail.

But the Cargo reissues sounded like crap and had horrible cheap packaging.  I returned the copy of Them I bought to Amazon because it was just a poor all-around release.

Yes, I agree with you, I have Cargo reissues like KD, MF, Obituary, Deicide and many others. Yes, they are crap but still I wanted those albums. I'm also scarred for the Metal Blade issues, how will they sound. Also I saw on amazon Dont Break the Oath.

So who puts out the highest quality vinyl when it comes to King/Fate?

Svart records, Earache and High Roller Records are the best. For KD and MF I really don't know but I will definetly buy pif these record companies release King's albums.

I was going to pre-order those, but wanted to buy them thru kngs store here. I asked if they would be available here, as i would rather order them direct to give king more of the profits, but last I looked I never got a response about availability.  I had them in my cart ready to go but changed my mind till I found out more about them.

Actually the ones I had questions about were reissues of Melissa and Them fro. Nuclear Blast.

Just try and find the original releases from Roadrunner, Metal blade and Massacre Records.
The (re)releases from Massace records concerning Voodoo, The Graveyard, The Spider's Lullabye and House Of God are excellent.

Agree! Massacre also done well! Bub, we are speaking about 500 handnumbered copies, right? I don't have PD of Voodoo (I don't like PD) so I don't know do you speak about this issue or clear copy?

I know there are some colored vinyl releases as well. I am talking about the (indeed limited) black vinyl releases.

Apparently metal blade is going to be doing vinyls for some of the roadrunner stuff.  Rumor has it they are in financial trouble so they are licensing some of the back catalogue out.  Metal blade already did a reissue of a type o negative album for record store day but I haven't heard if it was decent or not.  I'm really hoping they do a good job because the reissues for the roadrunner stuff done so far has been pathetic, not too mention roadrunner is sitting on a gold mine of classic releases that could be reissued.

My "9" vinyl on Metal Blade sounds amazing. That was a new album, though. Its difficult to guess how a reissue will sound. Will they get their hands on the master tapes? Who knows. This makes me want to listen to my vinyls right now, but I punched my stereo receiver because it was shorting out.  :kopfpatsch:

Yeah I have all the original pressings of King's albums from FP to The Eye, as well as the Masscre reissues of Voodoo and Spider (which are pretty good, but not amazing).

I'm just looking for a good sounding version of Them.  The CDs all sound like crap, and the LPs are mediocre so I was hoping a remaster could fix its issues.
Title: Re: King Diamond vinyl reissues 2014 from Metal Blade
Post by: Jean le Noir on April 28, 2014, 01:53:53 pm
Not remaster, it would be nice to release master sound, like on first press  :icon_biggrin:

I think in july High Roller Records will release Possessed - Seven Churches on LP from original master tapes, and this is what I looking for. I preordered Death - Leprosy vinyl from Relapse and today I saw that will be remastered album. Too bad, but I don't have this album on vinyl so nevermind.

Them - remastered sound was disaster but I bought Cargo reissue on vinyl because I did not have this LP. And now I'm waiting for master sound on vinyl.  \m/

I hated the reissues they did several years ago with the bonus tracks.  It ruined the way the sides were setup and the sound was not the best.  I pre-ordered them from my local record store, I cannot wait to get them.

OK, they look legit to me. What am I missing? Why the question in this thread about the validity of these sweet vinyls? They are Metal Blade pressings, orderable from King's official merch shop and advertised on his Facebook page:

Also see there is coming two more reissues of KD on Metal Blade in may. But havnt seen any about these on the Metal Blade pages.

There is coming two version of:
Deadly Lullaby 2xLP on red/black vinyl and clear vinyl
Give Me Your Soul...Please 2xLP on blood dress vinyl and cold as ice vinyl.

Anyone know anything more of these. Originally The Deadly Lullaby was a 3xlp, and Give me Your Soul...Please was single LP. GMYP as double could mean bonus track.
But how good could a 3xLP squiezed onto a 2xLP sound?

The easiest way is to cut tracks, I don't think they will do that though!

I have the original Deadly and goddamn that is an awesome record!

Hell i have a no presents for Christmas vinyl in my limited collection of vintage recording cant wait to hear.   Unless its scratched to all hell  personally think vinyl records sound better the cd or cassette tapes.  Of course the depends on the phonograph as well speakers equalizer etc.  But yes cant wait to get my hands on them.

I ordered the Deadly Lullabyes clear reissue from someone on ebay.

I'm interested to hear how the new Them sounds compared to the original.  To my ears it's never sounded good on any format as it is the worst sounding King Diamond album which is a shame.

I love the sound of the Melissa reissue.  It is a LOT better than the 2007 issue.  It is very comparable to the original issue I have in the 1980s.  I will have to listen to that one again to compare.

Here is "Them"

I have only listened to each LP a few times but here is my opinion as a King Diamond/Mercyful Fate fan:

I think these versions on LP are probably the best, if not the best versions of these recordings I have heard.  The only versions I have heard which may be better are the original LP issues from the 1980s.  My local record store should have Don't Break the Oath and Abigail in stock this week, and they said they will hold one copy of each when they arrive for me.  I will give my opinion on those after I give them each a few listens.

It sounds very comparable to the original LP.

Thanks for the report.

I just have a question for you as I never had the original vinyl of Abigail and ''Them''.

Here are the versions I have:

King Diamond - Abigail: 2 LP version issued by Roadronner Records (Cargo Records) RRCAR 8788-1 (This one sounds fine);
King Diamond - Them: 1 LP version issued by Roadrunner Records (Cargo Records) RRCAR 8785-1 (this one sounds terrible and I suspect the issue is that they crammed the whole album + 3 bonus tracks in 1 side and half of the other...).

They appear to be from the same set of reissues (re-released back in 2007 if I`m not mistaken). Abigail sounds fine (with bonus tracks as well). For whatever reason, they released Them with bonus tracks and used only one LP (and not even half of the B side :p). Obviously the sounds suffers. Having never heard the original LP, I want to get my hands on this new reissue only if anyone can confirm that it sounds better than this terrible version?

You mentioned than this reissue sounds comparable to the original one... will I be wasting my money getting this new version?

The ''Them'' version I have on LP is not listenable.

Thanks for your help!

Just got the Deadly Lullabyes reissue today from Metal Blade's eBay store.  Top notch pressing (clear vinyl), dead quiet vinyl and the sound quality is very good.  I'm impressed.  I buy only vinyl, so I've come across many mediocre and crappy modern pressings, and this is surely NOT one of those.  I can faintly hear the thud of the Matt Thompson's foot hitting his hi-hat pedal and the instrument separation is fantastic, with room for every instrument.  Apparently it was pressed from the original analog/vinyl masters and it shows.  I've not heard the original pressing, so I can't compare it but this one sounds like they're performing in front of me.

The packaging is also really nice.  The inner sleeves/LPs were put in between the pockets of the outer jacket so there wouldn't be split seams (people that buy new sealed LPs will certainly know what I'm referring to).  And it was sealed this way!  Impressive and that shows the label cares about its product.  I'm about the order the other reissues!

Good job Metal Blade.

If anyone is interested I can post pictures.

Got mine from the same place and have no issues. One tiny little bend on one corner, but that was actually my fault when taking off the shrinkwrap.

Great albums though, really thinking about ordering the KD ones. Only reason I didn't is because I just picked up the first press copies at a record store in pristine condition. Very happy with the MF albums though, hope they release more one day soon.

They should at least do the other 3 King Diamond records.  Looks like they are doing Sepultura - Schizophrenia, Obituary - The End Complete & Deicide - Legion next.  So glad they are able to put out all this classic roadrunner stuff.

I just purchased the abigail reissue from metal blade in blue vinyl.  It is dead quiet and sounds outstanding.  I was amazed at how good it sounds.  I highly recommend purchasing.  I will be buying Them next.

How does the cover art look? Most of these reissues are just photocopied and have shitty looking covers, most notably the logos are always blurry. I can tell just from the pics posted here that the colors are way off on Them, looks like too much color saturation and darker than normal. Aren't these selling for around $27 US dollars? Seems like for that price you might as well just get the originals, you can usually find the first four KD LPs for around $20-$30

The album cover is not very high quality and looks about what you described with the Them cover.  It has a one page piece of artwork with lyrics which does not look to bad.  They did opt for a higher quality inner sleeve that is plastic and paper.  The inner part being plastic which is nice.  I paid $29 for my copy and purchase through King's website.  I could of purchased it for about $ bucks cheaper but I wanted to support him.  For me when I purchase vinyl my main concern is getting high quality vinyl not so much on the artwork so this copy was well worth what I paid to have a record that is dead quiet and sounds top quality in a custom color on 180 gram.

The colors on "Them" look much darker compared to my original copy, but this is quite normal, and I wouldn't call it a photocopy.  The logo is not blurry at all.  This could be how the actual cover was meant to look like.

I bought my LPs for $22.95 each from my local record store.  Used copies of King Diamond/Mercyful Fate albums always go for at least that much!  My only complaint is that the information on the spines could be bigger.

So i went to the nearest record store to me on my way back from vacation.  I called them and asked 8 f they had any kd or mf 9n vinyl in stock.  He said they had mf dont break the oath and kd abigail in stock.  I already had kd abigail but not mk dbto so i stopped in.  The recorx store is an hour from my house and is called Virtigo Records and is the best record store i know of in Michigan.  It is very big and has a really good selection.  The place has character as well.  I bought the copy of mf dont break the oath which is the new Metal Blade reissue in 180 and sounds outstanding just like the copy of abigail does.  Just for kicks i checked out the copy of abigail he had and it was the Roadrunner reissue with extra tracks wow!  Just like many have said the cover looks like a really bad photo copy.  I cannot understand why Roadrunner would even release something so bad.  Roadrunner is a pdetty big legit label so i was stunned.  Metal Blade has out done them selves and gain some serious respect from.

I saw the Abigail in person a few days ago and the logo on the front actually looks sharper than the original. The colors are a little more vibrant too. Its almost like they "remastered" the artwork. Unfortunately the back cover was not as good. The photos of the band and some of the text was a little fuzzy looking. The only ones I am debating on buying are Fatal Portrait and Them since you can get the original pressings for around the same price as the re-releases. If they re-release Conspiracy, The Eye, or the live album I would definitely buy them since the original pressings are a lot harder to find. I am sure most people don't care but I am really obsessed with the quality, especially after seeing those horrid LP's Roadrunner put out where the back of the LP jacket had the CD case design on the back!

Does anyone know if they are making these from the original analog master tapes? I know that many of these vinyl re-releases are taken from the digitized files they use for the CD, which pretty much defeats the purpose

They are re-releasing The Eye on September 30.

By listening to the LPs, they are from the original analog master tapes.

It officially gets released on Tuesday, but I have been a very loyal customer to the store I got it from, so they will give it to me when they get the shipment in they will charge my CC on tuesday so they technically are not breaking street date.  I will try to give it a spin on Monday and give a review.

Where did you order it from?  You probably got the Cargo remastered version of Them which does have the crappy pixelated artwork and even worse sound quality.

I finally got around to listening to the vinyl reissue of The Eye.  The packaging looks practically identical to the original vinyl pressing, so no shitty bootleg look.  Also, the clear vinyl is pressed center and free of defects.  Very little surface noise.  Top notch quality pressing.  This seems to be par for the course for Metal Blade's vinyl reissues, unlike most of Roadrunner's recent US vinyl reissues which are riddled with pressing defects.  So kudos to Metal Blade for not being cheap and getting a good pressing plant to press their vinyl.

The mastering sounds very similar to the original Dutch pressing, which was less bassy and clearer sounding than the American pressing.  So overall I'd say this was worth the $22 from Amazon considering the sound quality, pressing and packaging quality, as well as the fact that original pressings of the 90s stuff can get pricey in good condition.

Now I am really wondering where they are getting the source material. I saw The Eye and Fatal Portrait at some record stores and with FP you can tell they had the original artwork because it looks sharp and clear just like the original LP, but The Eye looks like they photocopied the CD booklet (lines are not sharp, has a little bit of a blur to it). I wish they would confirm if the original master tapes are being used or not. Well, not that that even matters, The Eye and everything after was probably recorded digitally to begin with so its not going to be true analog. Usually with these re-releases they will put a sticker on there saying something like "remastered using original master tapes", but I haven't seen any info on these. Personally I am only concerned with the first 4 albums and the 2 MF albums as those are the only ones that would have been recorded on analog equipment

so after accidentally ordering the shitty copy of "them" online, i ordered the new 180 vinyl from relapse records.
i waited 3 weeks and nothing showed up, so i wrote them.

they had no record of the order, so i sent my receipt and payment information to them and they said "sorry! but we actually dont have the album in stock."
so they charged me, didnt know they charged me, and then when i finally talked to them about it, they didnt even have the album.

luckily i was in austin tx recently, went into a record shop, and found exactly what i was looking for. now, im the proud owner of the white vinyl THEM.

they had no record of the order, so i sent my receipt and payment information to them and they said "sorry! but we actually dont have the album in stock."
so they charged me, didnt know they charged me, and then when i finally talked to them about it, they didnt even have the album.

luckily i was in austin tx recently, went into a record shop, and found exactly what i was looking for. now, im the proud owner of the white vinyl THEM.
You get a refund?

Ordered twice from Relapse and all was perfect. But now, when shipping is almost 20$ I stopped to make orders from them. Actually, I do not order from USA at all, only from amazon and hells headbangers, they send items to Europe through DHL and that shipping is fair.

I have always wanted to see 45RPM 2 X LP MFSL versions of THEM and Abigail. Not sure it will ever happen, but would love to see it. Right now, other then 1st pressings of everything, these Metal Blade reissues are the definitive versions to get.

I totally agree with you. The rare, original cover art was perfect and I don't know why it was changed (does anyone?).

We can hope... I'll keep my fingers crossed.

From a discogs comment

"If you missed out on the now sold out 1500 copies Red version on Metal Blade, it's getting reissued by metal blade on black vinyl in January"

Can anyone verify this? My red copy of Melissa got lost in the mail, and I really want to own it on vinyl.

yes, I wrote that. it was here: http://shop-hellsheadbangers.com/mercyful-fate-melissa-reissue-vinyl.asp
until a couple days ago, now sold out, they will get more eventually.

and it is also here: http://www.hrrshop.de/MERCYFUL-FATE-Melissa-BLACK_1

still waiting for The Beginning... also did anyone get the Abigail reissue on Music On Vinyl records, released on Halloween 2014? I am interested to know how it compares to the recent Metal Blade vinyl reissue, which sounds fantastic.

Weird that it doesn't seem to exist anywhere else... Not on amazon, not even on the metal blade shop. I live in Sweden, and this is probably my most wanted album now.

I just received my copies of the new Metal Blade vinyl pressings of Melissa (BLACK VINYL) and Return of the Vampire (WHITE VINYL)

Melissa (BLACK VINYL):
Inside it was the printed inner sleeve for Don’t Break the Oath – not Melissa.  Did anyone of you get the BLACK vinyl with the correct printed Melissa inner sleeve?

Return of the Vampire (WHITE VINYL):
I came WITHOUT inner sleeve.  Did anyone of you get it WITH a printed inner sleeve??

I think these delays are because all the pressing plants have crazy long delays (4 months average) and Record Store Day just pushes the delays back even further because the plants make room for the RSD releases even if labels have already long-since scheduled their releases.

But at this point I'll believe it when I see it, it was supposed to be out in November initially...  :kopfpatsch:

Anyway was listening to my Don't Break The Oath and Abigail reissues the other night, they are some of the best sounding lps in my collection, really high quality pressings... so I will continue to look forward to The Beginning.

Has anyone kept track of these? I mean, there seems to be a lot of different versions out there and at the same time bootleggers are pressing their own prints. I would love to buy everything official (well, so far have managed pretty good, example, 4 versions of In The Shadows remake, along the original, in different colors!?) but it seems absolutely impossible to keep track of every different print...

Also, has anyone got the new Voodoo and Graveyard yet? Description on the shop says there's a poster inside. Pictures? Would be nice to see upfront, since I'm now concentrating on the earlier reissues before they disappear completely...

I just got Conspiracy in my local record store. This one looks 100% identical to the original pressing, no blurry logos or photocopied photos like the other releases. You can tell they had access to the original artwork for this release. If you look at Abigail and Them you will notice the back covers are blurry and look like they were photocopied from the CD booklets. The Eye looked blurry on the front and back as well. I hope all the future releases look this good because everything after The Eye is hard to find the original vinyl pressing

I saw Abigail Live sealed the other day at a local shop.  I didn't know this was part of the reissue campaign, but indeed, it has copyright info on the back for Metal Blade 2014.  Sounds great.  I had never heard this album before and I'm pleasantly surprised!

My Them record is WHITE vinyl!

Is your BLACK vinyl copy of Them the reissue from Metal Blade??
Or did Metal Blade release both a colored and a black vinyl edition of Them (like they did with Melissa)?

It is infact a Metal Blade reissue. Unfortunately I missed out on the white vinyl run, it was out of stock everywhere for months until just recently, which I assume all second printings are in black vinyl. Abigail and Fatal Portrait are out of stock in a lot of places (I had to pay a premium for Abigail, and got lucky enough to find Fatal Portrait in a record store), so I can only guess they'll be coming out on black vinyl soon.

I'll trade you my black for your white. Haha.

Hey guys, I have a question for anyone who owns the recently released Abigail: Live in Concert, the Metal Blade reissue. I just got it today and went to give it a listen and I see that the record itself is red, but has faint black smudges going through it. It sort of looks like those colored marble vinyls but the black seems so unevenly distributed that it looks like it's there by mistake. It definitely looks like it's actually etched into the record. I thought this record was supposed to be just red...is the black on mine a defect or some kind of marbled effect thats supposed to be there? Thanks, I'll try to get a picture later.

Please post a photo and we can compare....

This happens with colored vinyl all the time. It's purely cosmetic and will in no way affect the sound.

Yeah, I was able to give it a spin the other day and of course it sounds fine. The only colored records I own are these KD reissues, so I didn't know how common some black coloring is. No problem then. Thanks guys.

But I also agree that quality control should be able to spot those not so perfect pressings and reject them in favor of a unified whole.
I think this sadly has to do with limited pressings, as a certain number of labels are printed in advance and they are applied at the same time as the record is being pressed. So if there are too many rejects, they won't make it to the target number of copies.

I love the sound of the Melissa reissue.  It is a LOT better than the 2007 issue.  It is very comparable to the original issue I have in the 1980s.  I will have to listen to that one again to compare.
Invisible Boy, I read that You were not disappointed about Metal Blade vinyls of King - Them and Abigail.
I wanted to buy them, but they are out of stock. But I can see still can got
Spider's Lullabye 2015
Graveyard 2015
Do tou got them, are they quality as good like these made in 2014?
Do you know which iof them sound better? - i mean black ones or coloured?
thank you
