Halford or King Diamond
« on: November 16, 2006, 09:59:28 am »
Hello.
On Judas Priests official site they have a forum where they discuss who is best singer: Halford or King Diamond. Not surprising most of the people in their like Halford best, but some also say that they don't think you can compare them.
Anyway, the question is, what is your opinion?
Personally I don't think you can compare them, because they sing in different ways!

I think Kind Diamond is definately the better singer - KD is singing more melodies and has a wide range in vocals....Halford is more screaming than singing (when it comes to the high tones  :fingers::king:

This thread seems so familiar....was it on the other board?

Well as I had stated before, these are two singers that cannot be compared. Maybe Halford and Dickinson or Halford and Geoff Tate or Halford and Midnight. But it's really tough to compare anything with King.

Halford is a god singing, from the lower to the higher notes

but then, King's the devil at singing  :fingers:

one good way to compare the two of them is by the cover from The Ripper King has recorded

i like MF version better than the original, and i think it's one of the better covers ever done; it simply fit like an glove on King's voice

Allthrough i can't picture Halford singing King's songs... no one, i've never saw, cand do what King do

I agree, and one thing that's always been on my mind since when I started listening to KD is what if they did a duet style song? Dueling falsettos?

I'm not going out on a limb here when I say that I think King is the better vocalist. He has far more range than Halford and sounds about 100x more demonic when he sings in his devil voice. Most people here seem to agree. Of course, this is a KD/MF fan board so the opinions here may be more than a little bit biased.

I agree with you. It was one of the better covers that I've ever heard. King and the boys simply nailed it.

a bit off topic but the new priest album fuckin rocked. I'm probably not "allowed" to like it by elitist metalheads just cause it came out after 1995.. but I think its amazing.

if more bands could be that

Only "Judas Rising" was good to my ears.

Between King and Rob....in the live setting, King clearly still has the chops if you compare "Deadly Lullabyes" to "Rising In The East".  And to me, that's what counts the most because you can doctor vocals in the studio all day long.

With that said, I look forward to new albums from both bands next year!

I enjoy King Diamond's vocals better....i think they are more theatrical and just creepy! but halford has a better voice if you are talking about trained vocal type sound....but i would not trade king's vocals for anything! they are amazing

do you guys know Sracred Steel's singer?

he's the only one who could imitate King

the band has suffered the same love/hate about the vocals

the best one to check out is 'Bloodlust'

on latest albums they've gone more thrash oriented

but it seems that on this new album they have covered MF... i'm still gonna get it

See, this is a one sided debate, being on Kings board lol

But, I will confess that King is the better of the two in my opinion.
Halford can go from low to high in the blink of an eye, but he only seems to have the one high range (Note I've been into Priest since the mid 80's) where as King can hit many variations of his range.
Hell, just listen to the harmonies he does on the studio albums. Many cases there are three or more vocal tracks, each a slightly different pitch blending in a twisted evil choir. :king:
You just can't find that with any other singer in metal past or present.

I actually found that Tim Owens to be a stronger vocalist than his predecessor/replacement

Well, I vote Halford all the way because he has a very powerful voice and in my opinion he is more technical than King and has a nicer tone too. King uses falsetto all the time to hit the higher notes, which can be even considered a technical limitation. Ask any vocal coach about that and 9 out of 10 will tell you that even if using falsetto is not necessarily bad, in their books singing full voice has more merit -- and in mine's too. Nevertheless, King has managed to make of his falsetto his signature, together with his tone changes. He is all originality, and of course that scores big in any comparison. But Halford's voice and style has also been much more influential than King's. So, I definitively say Halford.

Note: Just in case, I'll state loud and clear here that I love King Diamond, but now we are talking about singing, ok? So please, avoid flaming, since we all will burn in hell at the end. :gah:

I have that album.  It's a good speed/power metal disc.  But the singing....for me sounds  a bit too thin and cheesy.  I can stand the guy's voice...but it's nowhere near King's or any other good singer's voice IMO

yeah, he's not as good. but i mean the reaction listeners had, and for the same reasons: the high falsettos.
