King's lyrics
« on: December 13, 2006, 07:54:06 AM »
Greetings for all of you! I am a new member of your forum, but I am a big fan of King's. I like especially his lyrics. And about this fact, I want to ask you about the lyrics of the song The Jonah, or even better, The Candle. It says that a part of the lyrics are an excerpt from The Book of Jonah...but I searched for them in the Christian Bible and there it doesn't even mention about a book...so I ask you...About which Book of Jonah did King think? Where are the lyrics from? Thank everybody whom reads and/or answers.

How about: he made it up.  It's just fantasy / horror in this case.
There is no Jonah book.

And welcome onboard.  \m/

Guess again  :fingers:

However, I'm not sure that this is the book King is referring to.

Jonah's passive character then is contrasted with the other main character: God (lit. "I will be what I will be"). God's character is altogether active. While Jonah flees, God pursues. While Jonah falls, God lifts up. The character of God in the story is progressively revealed through the use of irony. In the first part of the book, God is depicted as relentless and wrathful; in the second part of the book, He is revealed to be truly loving and merciful

So what you mean is that in the book, Jonah and God are opposite characters, right? And that King uses these quotes from the book to emphasise his irony for God...interresting...but from what I know, in the Christian Bible, Jonah is saved by God (even if he has sinned, he returns towards God), therefore considering him a positive character. So, the main question remains...The Book of Jonah exists, both in the Christian and Hebrew Bible, if I am not wrong. But in none of them you can find King's "quotes"...So, where are they from?

is it quotes?    i think that it's on " " as for a speech; not a quote from the book

as for the convertion of Jonah, in wikipedia says that the book has two very distict parts; so king might be inspired by the first one... when god's 'evil'

altough, i do not see a clear relation between Jonah and Molly. Anyone please?

No no no, they are quotes...thereto, I found in many sources, actually in all of them where I searched for King's lyrics, written between brackets or square parantheses [From The Book of Jonah]. So they are indeed quotes.

I always took from the KD lyrics, that just as the biblical Jonah was trapped in the belly of the whale, so was Molly trapped inside the Fatal Portait.
