Yeah, the fallacy of labeling doesn’t help much, but it is interesting from a historical perspective to see how things existed and developed back then. Guess what matters most is what it sounds like to your own ears...

Wow! Talk about militant. Can I expect a car bomb for your next reply? Anyways...I didn’t even say they were black metal...I said Black HEAVY Metal, a term used by another Diamondbanger named Jowita, before I started using it. But labels are really not that important to me. I already explained why I felt the term Black Heavy Metal fit MF, but far be it for me to shake up the rule book of the ultra exclusive and ultra cvlt Black Metal tree house club.

Should I take that as a surrender?
Depending on what sex you really are, I can show you just how “gay” I am. You can either stand in front of me over a cliff or stand in front of me bent over a desk. Watcha got in that box, Pandora?

Really, I’m not here to fight anyone, armed or not, so don’t take these discussions so personally.

Well , it just annoys me when I hear people say they're black metal I've been listening to Mercyful Fate since 1984 and the "nu" generation call them black metal and you already know what I think.

... and I don't bend over for people I don't know.  :P

But they were referred to as Black Metal back in 1984! That's the whole point - that in the early 80's, Black Metal didn't have one specific sound to it. If anything I'd say it's the opposite, that the 'nu' generation that got into Black Metal through 'Cradle Of Filthy Dimmus' are the ones that don't think of MF as Black Metal just because MF don't have the raspy vocal style etc.

BTW, you look young for someone who was listening to MF back in 84!

yea....you missed it.  I'm only 20, but half of my friends are headbangers from those days and they ALL credit Mercyful Fate as being black metal.

I can think of a ton of black metal bands right now that don't fit the super fast, brutal, raspy vocal style that formed either during or after the Norwegian invasion.  It goes to show that black metal has more to do with atmosphere and lyrical content/philosophy than just a superficial sound.

Keep in mind that I'm not attacking you at all.  Just informing a fellow metalhead of something they might be interested in at the moment.

Mercyful Fate is not a black metal band in terms of how we nowadays know black metal.
However, Mercyful Fate is one of the most important bands for giving the influences to create black metal.

I do like many black metal bands, but Mercyful Fate always give me more magical feeling than those (real) black metal bands. Melissa, Don't Break The Oath and Time = Better than black metal.

Still I respect Emperor, Dissection and other talented black metal bands. Bathory is also cool, even I'm not that familiar with their music yet.
