Them, Voodoo, The Graveyard Those I think are the most catchy and really stuck in my head. Actually I cant believe no one else mentioned Voodoo, it is so well done and has parts that giv eme goosebumps and shivers.  :)

I also think that the 3 strongest albums are Abigail, Them and Conspiracy.....but Fatal Portrait is a hell of an album, anyway!! (like all the other KD/MF releases of course....) :king:
I agree, portrait is truly a great album

As far as story line and especially the sound production itself, Conspiracy is the best.  Them is the heaviest and most fun to listen to, and Abigail is the most "powerful."   \m/

Don't get me wrong. I do like Conspiracy but it's still one of my least favourite KD albums. Sleepless Night, At The Graves and "Amon" Belongs To "Them" are excellent songs but overall the album could be even better. Guitar playing is awesome on the album. Conspiracy is surely a good album but not even close to other releases from 80's. So Fatal Portrait is better album than Conspiracy IMO.

Top 3 KD-albums (at the moment):
1. Abigail
2. The Puppet Master
3. "Them"

----------------------
4. House of God

I like Fatal Portrait a little better Conspiracy is awesome too but "Charon" and "Dressed In White" are some of the best King tracks written IMO  :king:

Conspiracy I think has a little bit better guitar work on it though

Bullshit. Fatal Portrait is better album overall.
Just my opinion, though. I do like Conspiracy as well, even it's my least favourite KD album. The atmosphere and the guitar playing are great in Conspiracy.

You know....I don't know what I was thinking way back when I made that first post.  Conspiracy is clearly the better album.  The songs are just written much better on Conspiracy, and there is a much stronger sound.  King's vocals are also more varied, and he does that normal clean singing that I always think sounds so cool.  On Fatal Portrait, it just seems like he was bored and did nothing but falsettos all the way through.  I could go more into this, but I'm writing a research paper at the moment.

I find myself listening to Fatal Portrait more, just for its overall eerie atmosphere. Just the fact that there are still some traces of Mercyful Fate in it, along with King Diamond's future sound, makes it a bit better than Conspiracy. But my opinion always changes. Depends on my mood really.

I think there's quite a lot of those traces. Same as In The Shadows has lots of traces of King Diamond.

I think there's quite a lot of those traces. Same as In The Shadows has lots of traces of King Diamond.

Exactly. The Evolution of King Diamond. There is a radical change between DBTO and Fatal Portrait. From the formula of MF to a more extreme darker aggressive style. I think that's why the normal voice was dropped on this one.
Then comes another radical change for Abigail, to a commercially viable style, especially the melodies. But still without the normal voice. On Them, he found the perfect balance of melody, commerciability, Mercyful Fatery, and at a time when the band and the songwriting was at its peak. And oh yeah, the normal voice was back! Conspiracy is an extension of Them, for the story obviously, but musically too. It's the most varied and intricate sounding album, with the keyborads and acoustic guitars playing a larger role in the overall sound.

So yeah, Conspiracy is a masterpiece, and the culmination of the first decade of the King Diamond style. Whereas Fatal Portrait is more of an oddball experiment in the big picture. An excellent one, but still not quite what King wanted to achieve. So how could the next Mercyful Fate album not be influenced by all this. Exactly, it couldn't.

But after saying all this, I still a soft spot for Fatal Portrait. And I consider side one of both Fatal Portrait and Conspiracy to be the best output by the King Diamond band.

Umm, I like both of them as well, depending on the mood... But that's not why I send this post. I would like to ask (not gonna spam with a new topic for all my moronic questions) should I buy next The Eye, Abigail II or House Of God? Here have some people mentioned HoG as one of their favourite album, so I just wanted to hear your opinion. Is it much like Voodoo? And some people have liked The Graveyard too, though it's popularly considered as a "bad" album. I don't earn that much money so it's not so small thing for me to buy albums, so I wish I could use my money as well as possible. Though I will of course buy all KD albums, it's just the matter of order in which I buy them  :)
The voice of Jouni Mömmö keeps haunting me.
