I was just re-listening to those old demos at the end of House of Satan, and it seems so weird to hear those versions. I was thinking that when you hear Into The Coven, for instance, you are really hearing a re-worked version of Love Criminals.

Hard Rocker is a really cool song, too. Kind of Judas Priest-ish, I think. And is Combat Zone an early version of what song? Is that Curse of the Pharaohs? Did Persecution ever become an official MF song? Or Truck Driver? I can barely hear Truck Driver, the sound is just horrible on it.

Also, is the demo version of Death Kiss that is included in the remastered The Beginning the version from Return of the Vampire or is it from House of Satan? Or a different version? (I don't have the remaster of The Beginning)

If they ever release a remastered version of Return of the Vampire, I hope they choose to include some of these tracks, too.
What's the story with these tracks anyway? Does anyone know?

Thanks for your help, guys.

I don't think they reworked Truck Driver. I mean, there isn't much very Metal about Truck Drivers. Aside from the fact they can almost legally do cocaine of course.

I know some truck drivers who are very metal. haha

Seriously though, is there a listenable version of Truck Driver someplace? The version I have (House of satan) sounds like it's from inside a water-filled barrel.

Several years ago I´ve searched for informations about all the Demo Songs for Mercyful Fate. Here are some info´s about the "Persecution" Session:

King and Hank helped out Michael Denner's old band, Danger Zone, back in April of '81. Together they recorded these 5 tracks in the 'Rocktape Studios' in Copenhagen:
1. Persecution
2. Mission Destoy Aliens
3. Truckdriver
4. Killed for Love (aka. Leave My Soul Alone)
5. Not Amusing

LINE-UP:
Michael Denner, Timi Grabber, King Diamond, Hank Shermann and Nick Smith

And for all who are interested in that stuff. Here´s a list about all songs from the first 5 years from Mercyful Fate (I found it years ago on a homepage):

A Corpse without Soul (Originally titled "A Corpse Without A Soul")
A Dangerous Meeting
At the Sound of the Demon Bell
Black Funeral
Burning the Cross
Combat Zone
Come To the Sabbath
Curse of the Pharaohs
Death Kiss (Became a part of "Walking Back To Hell")
Desecration of Souls
Devil Eyes
Doomed By the Living Dead
Evil
Fighting For the Knighthood
Gypsy
Hard Rocker (Actually titled "Not Amusing")
Immigrant song (A cover of the Led Zeppelin classic)
Into the Coven
Killed For Love
Leave My Soul Alone (Actually titled "Killed For Love")
Love Criminals (Became a part of "Into the Coven")
Melissa
Mission Destroy Aliens
Night of the Unborn
Nightmare
Nightriders (Became a part of "Curse of the Pharaohs")
Not Amusing
Nuns Have No Fun
On A Night of Full Moon (Became a part of "Desecration of Souls")
Persecution
Powers of Darkness (Became a part of "Return of the Vampire")
Return of the Vampire
Running Away
Running Free (Actually titled "Killed For Love")
Satan's Fall
Shadow Night (Only performed live)
Some Day (Became a part of "On A Night of Full Moon")
Sometimes You're Deadly
The Oath
The Sabbath of All Witches (Only performed live)
The Witch  (Only performed live, became Melissa)

Walking Back To hell (Became a part of "A Dangerous Meeting")

"Killed For Love" was released on official compilation "Return Of The Vampire" as "Leave My Soul Alone".

"Sometimes You´re Deadly" and "Fighting The Knighthood" appear on the BRATS Bootleg "18th January 1981" - it was released last year on Vinyl and includes all songs from this rehearsal session (except "Someday" which is missing).

Tracklist:

1. Death Kiss 4:41
2. Fightin' For The Knighthood 8:16
3. Love Criminals 8:42
4. Combat Zone 5:25
5. Night Riders 4:13
6. Sometimes You're Deadly 9:43
7. Powers Of Darkness 3:32
