7 strings in KD
« on: January 24, 2007, 03:36:49 PM »
Does anybody know if Andy and co. have ever played a 7-string on a song or two?

I always thought Andy was a BB King fan. His way was to know a couple chords and how to use them a million different ways. Seems like adding another string would just lose that discipline. Besides, I always thought 7 or 8 strings were mostly for playing live for songs that have large variances in tones. I need to get a detuna like EVH, just need a bunch of $$.

Just noticed the red letters that talk about an old topic
Can one of you guys clear up a matter for me; is it appropriate to comment on an old post (past the 120 day period), or start a new one. I was just trying to avoid the whole "this thread has been started elsewhere hence locked by an admin thing"  :P

I, too, wonder about the "net-iquette" of digging up old threads. On some other boards I've been accused of being a necrophiliac for dredging up old stuff from the thread attic.

Every KD song is played with a 6 string.  Off the top of my head they are all standard tuning with the exception of "To The Morgue" and "Killer", which are D tuning, "Insanity" which is DADGAD tuning, and the acoustic pieces of "One Down Two To Go" are open Em tuning.

MF is all standard tuning except the "9" album has some different stuff ... I think it's just The Grave is in Drop D and Church of Saint Anne is 7 string.

But at the same time, it seems like the admins say that the thread is already started somewhere else.   ::)
Thanks for trying Lucifers Mirror  :king:

St. Anne is definitly tuned down down; mabey an A. Dont have the CD anymore so I cant compare it.  :'(
I tune to a drop A with a Stat imatation (Eastwood) and just use EB Slinkys (seems like 52 or 54 guage) so a 7 string isnt completely neccessary. Then again I am pretty ghetto, and I can only hit the strings so hard before I get the rattles.  :D:

I think Mike may have used a 7 sting on some songs on 9, I could be wrong though.

Yeah, Saint Anne is standard 7 String tuning, low string B.  The Grave is just Drop D.  Rest are standard.

Hi Guys,

FYI Church of St. Anne is 6strings with  E dropped to a C#.
The Grave is a drop D, gives that cool Sabbath feel.
My new band Demonica is 6 strings tuned in C (C F Bb Eb G C)

What's real interesting about Hank's membership here is that he's not listed as "the band", like King and others are...

Hey Smechies ,
Yep its only the E string you tune down to a C sharp.
We had a few 7 strings from Schecter at the time of recording the 9 Album and I'm sure Mike did all or most of his solos
on these due to good sound and playability.  We also used the Schecter guitar with the B string off to record some parts, so still 6 Strings I guess :-)
Maybe I can find a few photos from the 9 session and add them to solve all the "string-mystery"   :D:

I checked my copy of the 9 show in Philadelphia (at the Trocadero) and it sure looks like Mike is playing a schecter 7 string. now, whether it has all seven strings on it, I couldnt say. :)

thanks again for posting, Hank. its great to see you here. \m/

Thanks a lot for the information.  I had all the notes right for my Church tab but obviously it was arranged wrong since I thought you used a 7 string.  Now the ending riff is much easier to play since the pedal note is an open string.

If you're still feeling generous about answering questions, I have one for you:

In Evil, towards the end when you're soloing and all the instruments drop out and it's just you playing that ascending lick up the neck ... are you playing a specific pattern over and over going up?  It was really hard to hear what you were doing listening to the old Evil recording, it sounded pretty chromatic but I wasn't able to definitely say what notes you were playing.  I guess I should listen to the new rerecording.  Did you play that lick the same on the rerecording?

Thanks again for the tuning answers.  I've spent a lot of time writing up MF tabs so it's good to finally get that song done.
