If you HAD to rank all the King Diamond albums....
« on: May 25, 2010, 07:26:03 PM »
I recently took it upon myself to re-listen to King's entire discography, in order.  While doing this, I thought it might be fun to come up with an album ranking.  Don't take this to heart, it is just my opinion, and it was very difficult to order because all the albums are so consistent and good. The first 6 were extremely easy to rank, but the bottom 6 were almost impossible to rank!  I also noticed that there are 12 official albums, so I think the next King Diamond album must be called "13". :D   I will probably do a similar ranking for all the Mercyful Fate albums in the coming months.  Again, I don't mean to offend anyone with this, just wanted to share my opinion.

The Eye
Conspiracy
Abigail
Them
House of God
Fatal Portrait
The Spider's Lullabye
Voodoo
The Puppet Master
Give Me Your Soul... Please
The Graveyard
Abigail II

Listing them all straight out seems too difficult for me. So I'll rate mine by the decades:

1980s-
Fatal Portrait
Abigail
Conspiracy
"Them"
The Eye

1990s-
Voodoo
The Graveyard
The Spider's Lullabye

2000s
The Puppet Master
Abigail II
Give Me Your Soul Please
House of GOD
Resistance is inadvisable...

The Eye is still linked with the 80s era, dude. And House of GOD floats the line with 90s albums era, too. The top of the decade isn't always the beginning of the decade...

I agree that about the era thing... definitely The Eye is from that feeling the band had at that time.. .but still... The record is from 1990..  :gah: :gah:

I'm surprised so few of you recognize that House of God is still the best album that King has put out since The Eye.  :)  But I am pleased to see I am not too far off in opinion from most of you.

There seems to be a pattern here, in my opinion, that King caps each decade with fantastic albums:  The Eye for 80s, and House of God for the 90s.  It is too bad we are probably not going to see a decade capping stunner this time around, though I hear there is still hope for a MF album.

I hate to contradict you. The Eye, a great album, is a substandard product when compared to the rest of the 80s albums(Mikkey Dee is sorely missed). And HoG is more tolerable than any of the 90s due to a better line-up(never was a Simmonsen/Estes fan). If HoG did one great thing for the band, it helped create the wonderful line-up the band has today...

Impossible to rank.

For instance Graveyard is my favorite but it is so different from the rest of his work.  When I think of King Diamond, I think of haunted mansions (or buildings in general), ghosts, and curses.

For that reason Abigail would have to be at the top because that and maybe Puppet Master because it has those type of elements.

Yet, Graveyard is still my own personal favorite.  Such a wicked departure from the tried and true stories but so awesome.

Interesting that KD & Andy think GMYSP is one of their best...something not shared by many of the posters here, including myself; thus far it's barely even made the top 5. I've already well documented the reasons I am not so keen on GMYSP, over produced, lack of agression, few to many stocking filler tracks and an all roound very tame play it safe album that has never inspired me. Still it's way better than what many other bands are capable of, but IMHO it's nothing compared to Abigail, Them, Fatal Portrait or Conspiracy ect. I'm hoping for a much better album this time, one that packs a punch for a change.

1. Puppet Master (front to back every song amazing; most creative story..could be movie)
2. Abigail II (i feel this record! the songs gel one after another)
3. House of God (very interesting; 1-ups the DaVinci code sort of; all the recent albums have amazing stories)
4. Give Me Your Soul (the more i listen the more i like..love Livia's role on this record too..purrrfect)
5. Abigail (if I put this record in right now, I might feel like it is #1)
6. Graveyard (spooky. this record is pure, pure evil)
7. The Eye  (some amazing songs on this record..80's music was taking a dive when it came out)
8.  Spider's (Eastman's Cure is one of his best songs ever)
9.  Conspiracy (a couple of heavy hitters; production is very 80's and LOUD)
10. Fatal Portrait (I love TheLake)
11. Them (only cuz of production)
12. Voodoo (like the album a lot..don't know how it ended up #12)

I am currently indulging in Dio's music out of respect and so my rankings are not based upon a recent back to back listening of every KD album.  Alas, here is my list:

1 - Conspiracy (I was addicted to this album back in 89 and even though it only has 7 full songs I find it more complete than any previous release or post for that matter)
2 - House of God (Just A Shadow could be the greatest song of King's career.  It is a "beautiful" album full of emotion and some very catchy riffage))
3 - Voodoo (when metal was at its bleakest period King pulled out a masterpiece of horrifying thrash)
4 - Abigail (The opening theme to Arrival followed by Kings lonely sounding vocals still haunt me after all these years)
5 - Give Me Your Soul...Please (The album that got me heavily back in KD after a decade long hiatus.  Amazing guitars and it contains "themes" as well as solos.  I love it how KD and Andy write "themes" for their songs)
6 - Abigail II (Having discarded this album after a few early spins I recently gave it a second chance and became addicted.  Brilliant guitar album, both melodic and heavy)
7 - Them (Contains some of KDs ultimate material but also a few weak songs - eg track 3 is often reserved for one of the stronger songs yet Tea doesn't sit right in this position in my opinion)
8 - The Graveyard (took ages to get into this album but now I find it quite prog and interesting.  Digging Graves and Daddy are faves)
9 - The Puppet Master (To me the weakest of the three Mike Wead era albums.  I cannot pinpoint why...the guitar work is fantastic and it contains some belters.  But for some reason I'd prefer to listen to GMYS...P and AII over this one)
10 - The Spider's Lullabye (It contains some solid material but I wish there were more guitar solos)
11 - The Eye (I have never really gotten into this album as much as I have tried.  There are some great songs like Behind The Walls and it probably should place higher in the rankings based upon the strength of its songs.  Alas, I have never found myself fully caught up in the KD experience while listening to this one)
12 - Fatal Portrait (Dressed in White was the first KD song I ever heard.  It is a great song.  But when I bought this album in 87 I was disappointed with most of the other tracks.  Just my opinion of course, but Abigail is such a massive step in the right direction for KD)

All in all - every album has delivered enjoyment, even some of my lesser favoured releases.  But my top 7 in particular have brought immense lifelong excitement and satisfaction to my ears, brain and soul.
