1st song for a new listener
« on: March 28, 2007, 10:43:51 pm »
I have a friend who's into mostly jazz & soft rock, but she wanted to hear some KD when I started telling her about him.  She only wants one song :'(, and I can't decide which to pick.  I don't want to pick something too extreme, as it might turn her away, but I still want to give her a good taste of the heaviness & complexity of the music.  What song do you guys recommend?  Please keep in mind I don't have all the albums, only Abigail through The Eye.

You could play her "A visit from the dead", the first 2 minutes or so are accoustic guitar, then it changes, as you know.

Or you could play "Time" the MF song, but this song is extremely depressing however.

Or you could just play the most recent hit like "Blood to Walk" right?

I dont know. Its definitely a hard choice.

I was thinking about A Visit from the Dead too, because the song is heavy, but King's falsetto won't hit her like a freakin truck...and I wish I had The Puppet Master so I had more to choose from...

Something from The Eye. Maybe Father Picard or Behind These Walls.

Yeah, A Mansion In Darkness seems to be one of those songs that everyone likes, or at least will appreciate on a certain level when they hear it.

Is this open to Mercyful Fate songs as well? Because if so, I like Bones' suggestion of the title track from Time, which shows the haunting side of the band and KD's falsetto whilst staying melodic and fairly accessible.

A Mansion In Darkness or Father Picard. Both are accessible and catchy, yet very impressive.

Mansion in darkness or maybe The Black Horsemen?
The latter is maybe my favourite  :king:
Like, whatever.

Huh...guys, he's not asking you which song is your favorite, he's asking you the best song for a first listener. Please take that into account. As good as Welcome Home is, I don't think it would appeal to someone who usually listens to pop-rock...

The Black Horsemen?

A lot of good suggestions here...but I'm gonna have to agree with Natas.  B.H. wins for complexity and overall versatility.  Great Tune!

I didn't know it was THAT serious. At the Graves, then.

Now that someone has mentioned Black Horsemen, I agree. If you want to show her something a bit more straight forward, then A Mansion In Darkness or Father Picard.

I had a friend that liked almost every type of music I introduced him to.  I played King Diamond for him a couple times and he hated it.  That all changed when he heard "At the Graves" one night.  He bought Conspiracy a couple days later and later filled in the rest of the collection.

Lol.
How about "I'm not a stranger"?

Ok now back to being serious:
Welcome Home. MANDATORY!!! \m/
I agree this is a must play for someone who is going to hear King.

You should convince her to listen to like 3 instead of only 1.
How much harder is it really to listen to 3 songs?

If she is only willing to listen to 1 song only, maybe its better to just forget the whole thing and not play her any songs.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody, I'll ask her if she'll listen to three songs at least.  I don't want to overwhelm her on the first listen, that's the hard part...

At least three times harder. For me, sometimes even one song is too hard, if it's something I don't like.
